“Zoot Suit” takes place in Los Angeles, where Chicano theatre originally arose in the United States in the 16th century. It is interesting to see how theatre comes full circle in this way. Similar to many of the pieces performed around the 1920’s and on, this play revolves around a serious political issue faced by many Chicano-Americans. This sector of the American society faced, and some may argue still faces, injustice and discrimination in the legal system. Henry Reyna and his friends are falsely accused of murder, and we can assume their cultural background had a large part to do with why they were arrested. At the beginning of the story, we learn Henry and his friends have been falsely accused before and it seems the police are just out to get them. This play also incorporates a unique and popular feature of Hispanic theater of mixing English and Spanish together. During the play, the characters switch between the two languages to show their multiple cultures. Hispanic theater is also known for being full of music and culture, which is evident in this play. They play even initially takes place at a dance. Then, we have music scattered throughout the play. The Pachuco likes to sing quite frequently during the play. “Zoot Suit” is such a classic Hispanic piece and it’s obvious why it is so popular, especially among Hispanic Americans.
